"..I like it."
All the way through reading the countless emails on this thread I've
been opposed to the idea. My desktop was clean with just links to my NFS
mounts and devices and Trash. All my app launchers are from the menu
panel.
After about 2 minutes I managed to clean up my home dir into a logical
order. It surprised me how un-organized it was when I thought it was
just the opposite from a terminal point of view. Now it's even better.
HOWEVER there are some pretty serious shortfalls the would need to be
addressed before I'd be happy to have this as the default. These are all
with the latest Ximian desktop releases (nautilus 1.0.6)
1) When changing from normal mode to Home dir as desktop, Trash and home
and NFS icons etc disappeard. I logged out and logged back in and they
appeared.
2) When cleaning up I was moving files and folders around to sub dirs.
Every so often a dir wouldn't appear to move to a dir I was dragging it
to. On closer inspection of the icon it seems that it did move the
folder, but left it on the desktop too. i.e. when I open the icon it's
location in the location bar was the correct new location. If view the
dir where it was originall it was gone (in this case ~). Very confusing.
This happened with files too.
3) The modifiers for moving files seem messed up as Ross pointed out. On
my setup Shift creates a link, Control copies, Alt brings up the pop-up
menu (like when using the right mouse button).
4) My ~ is NFS mounted here at work and opening a new window with Home
as desktop seems a HELL of a lot slower than opening the same dir from
inside a nautilus browsing window.
5) Refreshing the desktop display should be an option in the desktop
pop-up menu. Ctrl-r is quite hard to get sent to the desktop if you have
Evolution open (it keeps opening a reply to message window even though
I've clicked on the desktop)
Finally a feature that DEFINATELY needs to be there is the ability to
Hide and icon from desktop view on a per-icon basis. I should be able to
click on some icons (multiple) and right click and have a hide from
desktop option. As I said my ~ is NFS mounted and is used on a few
different platforms (OpenStep 4.2 for example so I have an Apps and
Library dir there that I want to hide).
Just my 2 cents worth. If anyone recognises what I mentioned as bugs
then cool. If some of them aren't listed then I'll fill them in. Could
someone try them out on gnome2 as I'm mid build at the moment.
