I've found that making guiTAR (a tar.gz viewer) the default for
mime-types of application/g-zip works pretty well.  It will fail on
plain gzip'd files, but most of the time I'm looking at .tar.gz files,
and those it reads.  It's a fair substitute until nautilus does it
natively.
