If you open a second window to the same location, however, the process of
opening the new window causes Nautilus to get fresh contents (which do get
displayed in both windows), and that's because of feedback from Nautilus

Why not check if the location we're opening in the new window is displayed
somewhere else and not clearing the cache in that case?

Might be OK. Feel free to try it and post the patch if it works well. One challenge you'll face if you make this change is that the code that's opening a new location is a component, so it doesn't have access to information about what other windows are open, but there could well be a simple solution for that.
