I've installed Nautilus PR3 on a Mandrake 7.2 sysem (with latest Ximian
GNOME) using the RH6.2 RPMs.
The first problem I had is that the version of freetype that came in the
Eazel RPMs isn't the version needed by Nautilus - I had to grab a copy of
freetype2 from rpmfind.net
Second, I cannot access the Eazel Services from within Nautilus. Going to
the location eazel: (or using any of the UI controls in Nautilus) gives me
the error:
"eazel:" is not a valid location. Pleae check the spelling and try again.
This is rather annoying...
Finally, the default setting of Nautilus tend to be ones that really show
off the visual power of Nautilus. while this might be good for a
pre-release (and the press), the final Nautilus should definitely have
default settings geered more for the lower end machine. A lot of software
lately seems to be so bloated it's even 'slow' (i.e. less than 4
milliseconds response time) on my PII 450, which it shouldn't be. Toning
down the setting helped a bit. Having a 'fast list' or 'fast icon'
directory list type that works more like gmc did (i.o.w. very quickly)
might be a good idea too. While after turning off some of the more exotic
and rather useless features of Nautilus made it bearable on my machine, my
mother's P233 would choke on it, most likely.
Other than that, and the rare crash, Nautilus so far is very good. Fix a
few odd bugs, speed a few things up, and you've got a winner. ^,^
