The .desktop file format is a well established standard for both GNOME and
KDE. This format is used for the program and URL launchers you see on your
GNOME desktop, in the menus, and on the panel. It is used similarly in KDE.
Nautilus does not yet support .desktop files, and has no way of creating
launchers for programs - see Bug 3269
http://bugzilla.eazel.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3269 . There has been talk of not
supporting .desktop files in Nautilus at all, and coming up with a new way of
making program launchers. I think that arbitrarily tossing away this
standard, without even having an alternative on hand, would be A Bad Thing.
Also, because this is one of the few things agreed upon by both the GNOME and
KDE camps, lack of support in the new file manager would seem like a major
step backwards for interoperability. Does anyone feel the same? Am I just
misreading the comments on this bug?
