I know this was a really old message, but I was going through the
archives:

The reason I would use a small mode rather than a tray icon is that the
tray icon tells me nothing at a glance. To see anything about the song
that is playing I need to move my mouse over the tray icon and wait for
the tooltip to pop up, thus distracting me from what I was doing before
hand. With a small mode I can set it neatly in the corner and can glance
to find out the details (and more details than are currently available
in the tray-icon's tooltip).

Other things are more convenient access to the play and volume buttons.
