Follow-up Comment #1:

This is most likely because your TERM environment variable is set to some
terminal that mc does not know. For some terminals, like "xterm*", "rxvt*",
and some others mc automatically filters out this kind of characters.

Which value does your TERM environment variable have?

Does the problem disappear when you call mc with the -x option?
