Thanks for this patch. After looking at it I've seen the real problem. 
When the various modes are set in view_new, they are not properly 
initialized, like in the view_toggle_*_cmd functions. I think I have 
fixed that in the current HEAD version. Can you please check if it works 
for you, too?
