No, it won't break anything. But it helps when someone tries to use
Fxx + Meta or Fxx + Meta + Shift. This is perfectly possible since
GNOME allows you to change keyboard shortcuts as you like. What the
patch does is simply enable MC to recognize the sequences generated by
gnome-terminal. On the other hand without the patch MC misinterprets
the sequnce and prints garbage on its command prompt (if enabled) -
you could try easily.
