Occasionally saw this thread and have a question:

Why don't you guys split syntax highlighting out to the separate
library with convenient API? For ex. vim also uses highlighting
and possibly other systems. Vim has much more syntaxes
supported (215) than MC does (24) and lisp was there for a long-long while.
So maybe it makes sense to join efforts with vim team and design this
library?
It will save efforts with new/more syntaxes supported and also for the
third parties to reutilise it if they want.
