Many Thanks Uli and Martin,
I am rather on the fringe of knowledge once these install problems go past 
correcting basic 'settings'.
In relation to libsigc I made no custom settings to the configure, just ran 
it 'as is'.
So, from what you say as I understand it is a known problem with libtool 
which is awaiting a fix?is that right?
