[HIG] Let's start rewriting!

HIG folks:

OK, I'm feeling a little better than I was last night and have now completed the things I think it's necessary to have to start the rewriting process. I will be sending out several emails in the next few minutes. Here's the executive summary of where things should go from here:

1) I will first send out an email including some general editorial comments I have on the draft. Authors, please keep these comments in mind as you rewrite.

2) I will then send out a "must change" list which indicates some significant changes we need to make to the document. There are a fair number of them, including adding another couple of sections (Feedback, Icons, and possibly Windows as well).

Sections 2 and 3 need some significant rewrite; section 4 is missing a number of controls, but otherwise the rest of the document is in decent shape, actually. For sections 2 and 3, we may want to draw liberally from mpt's IG2H, which covers much of the same material.

3) I decided it made more sense to go back and finish the comment integration than to try and move everything into the must-fix document. So you can now get a nicer version of the PDF with comments integrated at

http://64.194.11.129/~aelman/hig_draft1_comments.pdf

and also the SGML version checked into CVS.

Basically, the comments integrated into this document should be used to revise those sections that don't need significant rewrites. For the sections that do need to be rewritten significantly, the integrated comments should be kept in mind for the new content.

4) Finally, I will send out an email containing some very short policy questions which require discussion and probably a vote. I'm sure I missed a few issues like this in the document, so if folks want to bring them up to me privately I'd appreciate it (I'd rather not clutter the list with issues that might not be all that controversial anyway).

5) Authors then will start rewriting sections of the HIG. Authors: if you're not sure whether you have time to do the rewriting I've asked for, let us know. Seth and I are willing to take on some of the revision tasks, and I'm sure we can get other volunteers as well. :) Authors should also prepare lists of screenshots needed for your section. This is _crucial_ for sections 4 and 5 in particular, but everything needs some.

6) The review process should be ongoing. As authors check stuff in, please email the list so that reviewers can go look at the newest content and provide feedback.

It'd be good to have the rewrites done in the next two weeks; ideal would be the next week or so.

Anyway, of course questions and clarifications should be posted to the list.

Thanks for all the hard work, everybody!
Adam
