In a less laconic answer (;P, i know murray must be a busy guy), GTK+ (and its wrappers) try not to be a monolithic-do-it-all library, it have not problems with using services from other libs. You can use only glibmm, atkmm or cairomm for a project and don't use, and therefore not depend upon, gtkmm.
This is the Lego way of life. :)

gtkmm uses classes from them in its API.
