gtkmm install on ubuntu/debian

I am trying to install gtkmm on Ubuntu Hoary - their pkg manager shows 
libgtkmm-2.4-dev with latest version listed at 2.6.1. However the 
dependencies include gtk-2.0(shouldn't it be 2.4 or 2.6?) and gcc-2.9.5 
Debian unstable shows libgtkmm-2.4.1 and libgtkmm-2.4-dev.

Any idea what I should load to get a good stable working gtkmm?  I have been 
using the 2.4x series from the Fedora 3 extra packages.
