gtkmm-2.5 dependencies

I notice that gtkmm-2.5 is dependent on atk-1.7 (although it is not checked
for by configure, I have found that gtkmm-2.5.5 will not compile with
atk-1.6), whereas gtk+-2.6 does not require atk-1.7.
Is this intentional, and will gtkmm-2.6 await atk-1.8 (or is atk-1.7 a stable
release)?
