Where is the configure.ac file for all the examples

i downloaded the gtkmm2.4. however, i realize that every source code only accompany by Makefile.am. But, i didn't found any configure.ac file accompany the source code. 

may i know how can i make those source code? i understand that i can manually g++ the source code. But, i just curious that how i can autoconfig and automake them.
