[gtkmm] gtkmm 2.4 popup menu accelerators

I am trying to create a popup menu with accelerators using gtkmm 2.4.1 
on Gentoo x86 with gcc 3.3.2.  My code successfully displays the popup, 
which functions normally, and the menu items display their accelerators, 
but the accelerator keys do not function.  I have since discovered that 
the sample code in examples/book/menus/popup displays the same behavior, 
leading me to believe that this is a regression or API change that 
slipped through the cracks.  Can anyone suggest a workaround to provide 
accelerators for popup menus with gtkmm 2.4?
