you can still get them quite easily second hand. and to be honest,
they *are* useful if you want to understand what is going on under the
hood. but with pango (i.e. client side rendering) for text and cairo
on the horizon, pretty soon most Xlib stuff is going to become fairly
irrelevant even when running GTK on X.
