I can confirm this, got the same errors (gtkmm 2.4.3) and changing 
start_editing to false solved it.
I just checked the API
(http://www.gtkmm.org/docs/gtkmm-2.4/docs/reference/html/classGtk_1_1TreeView.html#a66)
and see this is the default value, why not leave it this way?
