[gtkmm] Canvas confusion

Hi all,

the last week I spend many hours figuring out how to work with canvas
using c++.

I installed every package (debian) that seemed to provide support for
canvas:

gnomemm, gtkmm, libgnomecanvasmm-2.0 etc
And almost any version (1, 2, 1.2, 1.3).

Since glade doesnt seem to support canvas I have to write the Makefiles
etc. by hand.

It wasn't possible for me to code a working example of a Canvas because
I'm new to the Canvas (used GtkLayout before) mixed with the problem of
wrong versions, packages etc, so I don't even know when it was a coding
problem or a package version Problem.

Could please someone tell me which packages and _versions_ I need ?
And what packages do I _not_ need ?

P.S.: Is a Canvas Tutorial available ?
