Error loading icon

Hi,
after upgrading from Gtk+ 2.4 (under CentOS) to 2.8.12
applications can no longer load svg icons:
Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading icon: Couldn't recognize
the image file format...
Gtk+ 2.4 comes with CentOS. I installed 2.8 from source.
Did I miss any dependency during installation? I compiled
and installed pango, cairo, glib, atk, gtk. Any idea was
causes this problem?
