Installing gtk+-2.8.4 issues

I am installing gtk+-2.8.4 on Debian. I have installed
pango-1.10.0 but still this messege is coming when I
do ./configure

-lgmodule-2.0 -ldl -lglib-2.0
configure: error:
*** Can't link to Pango. Pango is required to build
*** GTK+. For more information see
http://www.pango.org

By the way the version of cairo is 1.0.0.

Any suggestions.
