Font color from 2.2 -> 2.8

I've recently upgraded my libraries from something around gtk+-2.2 to
the latest gtk+-2.8.3.  Everything is perfect except the fonts in my
application are now showing up a funny color (I'm not running any kind
of desktop, just metacity on X), instead of the fg[text] color in the
resource file which I am reading in explicitly.

Any ideas?
