pango-1.4.1 compilation error

Dear all, 

while trying to compile (./configure) pango-1.4.1 I got the following error:

checking for fontconfig >= 1.0.1... configure: WARNING: No fontconfig
found, skipping tests for FreeType and Xft
configure: error: *** Didn't find any of FreeType, X11, or Win32.
*** Must have at least one backend to build Pango.

I have installed fontconing locally on ~/fontbin. And now I dont know
how to tell pango to search for fontconfig in this particular
directory. I looked at ./configure --help but there was no any option.
