Too much space between treeview columns

Here's my treeview setup:
I have 2 columns - 1 is a pixmap column, the other a text column. The
pixmap reflects the "state" of the column - expanded, or unexpanded (like
the file browser in Windows) and the second column is the text name for
the node (the directory, if you follow the anaolgy).
When a node that is 10 levels deep is expanded, all the text in the node
name columns gets moved over so that all the text names are left aligned.
This creates a huge gap of space between the pixmaps and the text. And
when that node is then collapsed from it's parent, the text remains at
that same position, it isn't moved back over to the left to "rejoin" the
pixmap column.
Is there a way to modifiy this behavior? The tree looks quite strange
with the text moved so far to the right away from the pixmaps.
