no Gtk2 pixbuf loaders?

Trying to build gtk+2.6.7 on RedHat 9. I got:
failed to load "./stock_about_16.png": Couldn't recognize the image file 
format
for file './stock_about_16.png'

What should I be doing here to fix this problem?
