GTK font related problem

Hello, I am running SuSE 9.0 with gtk version 1.2.10 and gtk-2.0. I also have 
Novell's Ximian package (desktop). After an update to my system from SuSE, 
when I open gtk packages, they will not display any font. Basically, 
everything is there except for any words whatsoever whether it is a menu
or even non-actionable text. How might I go about fixing this problem? I am 
assuming that apps are no longer able to find the font they are supposed to 
be using. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated... /Peter
