pkg-config does not search in the right directory. You can try:

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/lib/pkgconfig
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:/usr/lib
./configure

This should work. You can alse search in the archives of this list, this
question has been addressed several times.
