gdk_draw_layout with GDK_XOR

Does gdk_draw_layout() allow to achieve the same effect as
[long deprecated] gdk_draw_string() + GDK_XOR GC function?
It seems gdk_draw_layout() always simply draws the text
over, no matter what GC function I set.
