Ugly close tab buttons in many themes

Subject: Ugly close tab buttons in many themes

With many GTK themes, the close button on tabs obscures the icon quite a bit, which is a very ugly sight (see http://ficusplanet.spymac.net/tabs.png). Does anyone know why this happens and/or how I can fix it? Thanks for any help.
