Trouble compiling 2.2.2 on Solaris 2.6 with Gcc 3.3.1

I'm having some difficulty compiling gtk 2.2.2 on solaris 2.6 with gcc 3.3.1
I have libpng 1.2.5, zlib 1.1.4, glib 2.2.2, pango 1.2.3, atk 1.2.4, and the
sun ld that ships with 2.6 in /usr/ccs/bin

The error that I'm receiving is failed to load "./stock_add_16.png":
Couldn't recognize the image file format for file './stock_add_16.png'

The gdk-pixmap.loaders file in the gdk-pixbuf directory only contains the
lines
# GdkPixbuf Image Loader Modules file
# Automatically generated file, do not edit
#


I would greatly appreciate any words of wisdom into this problem.
