You only have to update the dependencies if you have to update the
dependencies. If a new GTK+ version requires updated dependencies then
you'll have the same problem when building from source, except it will be
more difficult. Basically, you don't make something easier by doing it the
difficult way - it's just more difficult.

Somebody in this thread suggested that the install should automatically
download the source of the dependencies and install them too. Of course that
would wreck any binary installation. It's OK in a separate prefix, but
garnome already does that for you, and the gentoo distro is all source all
of the time for people who think that's fun.
