GtkItemFactory escaping

Hello dear list members,
is it possible to escape the GtkItemFactory's path separators?
I tried '//' and '\/' to no avail except a core dump.
Do I have to use other means (lower-level GtkMenu-stuff, that is)
here?
Please CC me or even better beaver-devel nongnu org, I'm not on gtk-list.
