GDK errors on solaris

I'm running gtk+-2.2.1 on solaris 2.8. Running the gtk-demo and just about
any other applicationthat uses gtk (gaim, mozilla, etc) I get the
following errors:

to UTF-8

** (gtk-demo:22385): WARNING **: Could not load converter from ISO-8859-15
to UTF-8

** (gtk-demo:22385): WARNING **: Could not load converter from ISO-8859-2
to UTF-8

** (gtk-demo:22385): WARNING **: Could not load converter from ISO-8859-9
to UTF-8

** (gtk-demo:22385): WARNING **: Could not load converter from ISO-8859-15
to UTF-8

(gtk-demo:22385): Gdk-WARNING **: Error converting from UTF-8 to STRING:
Conversion from character set 'UTF-8' to 'ISO-8859-1' is not supported

(gtk-demo:22385): Gdk-WARNING **: Error converting from UTF-8 to STRING:

I've installed the latest versions of libiconv and gnu gettext and
recompiled, without any change. Any ideas on how to deal with these
errors?
