GtkCTree functionality in GtkTreeView - how?

I would like to get the GtkCTree-like look of a real tree - with lines, 
connecting nodes,
- now, as GtkCTree is assumed to be depricated - is it possible using 
GtkTreeView?
And then, there are "vertical-separator" and "horizontal-separator" 
style properties
for GtkTreeView widget - what are they for?
