obam-like support anywhere

Hi -

On HP-UX, some utilities like sam have the ability to run as either an X
window GUI, or a TUI (CUI? I'm still a very green UI newbie).   This was
accomplished with something called "obam" that allowed calls to create a
window to create either an X window or a "window" on a terminal.

Is there anything like that around compatible with gtk et al?
