A simple (I hope...) question

Hello,
  This is my very first time on that list, so I'd like to say "Hi" to
everybody and gladly ask for help ;>
  My question is that I'd like to write a simple game, using gtk as my
fronend to user. But, I want to load an image into one widget
(gtk.Image) as map, and then display some "units" on it (remember
freeciv? ;> ). So, is there any possibility to display one image on top of
another, giving its exact possition (AFAIK gtk uses boxes... but I cannot
create a box for every unit... or maybe can I?). If somebody had an anwser
for that, I'd be very pleased ;>
