can't build GTK+ 2.2 on SuSE 8.1

Hi all, I can't seem to figure out what I need to do to build GTK+ 2.2 
on SuSE 8.1. I've been able to compile all the depencies like
	- Glib 2.2.0
	- Pango 1.2.0
	- ATK 1.2.0

it seems to be failing on libgobject.

grep: /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.la: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.la: No such file or 
directory
libtool: link: `/usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.la' is not a valid libtool archive
make[3]: *** [libgtk-x11-2.0.la] Error 1
