transparent widgets

Hi all,
is it possible to let widgets have a transparent background ?
I use a GtkLayout with some movable widgets inside which I want to
connect with lines (gdk_draw_line).
What would you recommend ?
1) Drawing on the layout and 'manually' redraw if needed ?
2) Each line in a separate widget ?
2a) The widget in 2) needs to be transparent, is that possible ?
3) Is there something like a line-widget ?
