File conflicts Failed install

I'm trying to install
rpm -ivh glib2-2.0.4-1gtk.i386.rpm
in /usr/local of Red Hat 7.3
It refuses to install and gives the
message:
file /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 from install
of glib2-2.0.4-1gtk conflicts with file
from package glib2-2.0.1-2

So I go into /usr/lib and zap the offending
file. But there are more such error messages,
so I go into /usr/lib and zap more offending
files. Altogether now, I have zapped
/usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.0.1
         libgmodule-2.0.so.0.0.1
         libgthread-2.0.so.0.0.1
         libgobject-2.0.so.0.0.1
         libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
         libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.0.2
plus I have rm -r a couple of gtk directories.
The result has been dissappointing!
The original error messages keep coming
back. It's as though I haven't zapped
ANY files at all!
I've run out of obvious GTK files to
zap and still the file refuses to install.
I'm worred I might have to wipe out
Red Hat 7.3 and reinstall it, because stuff
is beginning to refuse to work.
  Any ideas?
I wish those error messges from GTK told
me exactly what file is the problem and
where it is. After all, GTK wrote both
versions and should know what conflicts
with what.
  Anybody got any ideas?
