What do you mean by 'grab focus'? 

If you mean gtk_widget_grab_focus()/GTK_CAN_FOCUS/etc. then no a
GdkWindow should not be required.

You would need a GdkWindow to do gdk_keyboard_grab() but I doubt you
want to do that.
