If you want a widget to be totally invisible, just call
gtk_widget_hide().

Widgets have to be at least 1x1 (the main historical reason for this
is that an X window and thus a GdkWindow has to be at least 1x1).
So changing the size request to 0x0 wouldn't help, widget would still
be allocated 1x1.
