installing gtk+ on redhat 7.3

Dear gtk,
I wish to install gtk on RedHat 7.3.  I downloaded the gtk+-1.2.10-15
tar file and extracted it then ran configure. Configuration failed with
the
following message:

checking for X... no
configure: error:

*** more details.

here are the last few lines of the config.log:
