only *ONE* colormap per application?? WHY USEFUL???

Is a colormap something you only have one per application???
It seems declaration and building of this beast was
unnecessary... why couldn't all declared and defined
colors automagically be added to some HIDDEN colormap
thingee so we wouldn't have to deal with it???
Am I missing something?
