can I temporarily disable keyboard accelerators?

Hi all; couldn't find the answer to this in any FAQ.

I'm writing a CAD program that uses lots of keyboard accelerators
and also allows the user to type text into the drawing area.

When the user is entering text, how do I prevent any keyboard accelerators
being activated?

(I can provide a sample program if anyone wants to see one.)
