resizing drawing area

Hi,

I have a window (top_level) that contains a vertical
box container. I am trying to add a menu bar to this
container and a drawing area. what happens is that the
menu bar is added and it gets resized whenever the
window is resized. But the drawing area doesnt get
resized at all.
I am using gtk-1.2.
Does anyone have an idea what could this be??
