GTK1.2.9 *and* GTK2.0.9

Hello,
I'm using SuSE Linux 8.0.GTK+1.2.9 and glib-1.2.9 are nicely installed
and working.  Midnight Commander and gftp p.e. are using these
softwares.
To be able to write CD-Roms, I use XCDROAST which requiers glib-2.0.x or
higher. 
Innocently I installed GTK+2.0.9 along with glib2.0.7, pango1.0.5 and
atk1.0.3.
I had read that both versions could coexist under the same Linux.
XCDROAST performs marvallously, but MC and gftp don't work any more.
What did I do wrong or did I omit something?
BTW is it possible to have both running?
