autogen.sh failure

I can't compile gtk+ (as well as all other things taken from gnome cvs)...
everything is stucked on autogen.sh.. is says that my automake is too
old... (huh?)

===snip-snip===
$autogen.sh
You must have automake 1.4-p1 installed to compile Gtk+.
Get ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/automake/automake-1.4-p1.tar.gz
(or a newer version if it is available)
===snip-snip===

But I have  automake  1.7...

===snip-snip===
$automake --version
automake (GNU automake) 1.7
===snip-snip===

I tried to put up automake 1.4-p1 but that doesn't help either...

==snip-snip==
$ automake --version
automake (GNU automake) 1.4-p1
.............
$ autogen.sh
You must have automake 1.4-p1 installed to compile Gtk+.
Get ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/automake/automake-1.4-p1.tar.gz
(or a newer version if it is available)
==snip-snip==

What's the problem then? How can I compile the source?
