glib configure

Hi I'm new to this list.
I am trying to install glib 2.0.6 on suse linux (2.2.16). I have installed
gettext and when I run configure for glib it fails with the error "checking
size of char... configure: error: cannot compute sizeof (char), 77".
The config.log file has an error saying that it can't load the shared
library libintl.s0.2. This library is definitely in /usr/local/lib.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
