Status of GNOME vs. Gtk 2.0 API?

Is work being done on the GNOME libraries that will get them running under
the Gtk 2.0 API? I tried some simple wrangling of GnomeCanvas last week and
got stuck pretty fast. The gnome-libs/README file says "1.2.x required".
